Ribbon Cutting at the Avenue A Co-ops

Two weeks ago, SGS joined in celebrating the official opening of the co-ops at 204 Avenue A. The opening marks the culmination of an 18-year process that began when the original building on the site was deemed structurally unsound and its residents were forced to relocate. The project was developed by SMJ Development and supported through the NYC Department of Housing Preservation’s Affordable Neighborhood Coop

erative Program and Development’s ANCP program, which allowed former residents to return to the site as cooperative homeowners.

Our design features terracotta-colored brickwork and a grid of tall rectangular windows that form an expressive addition to the existing street wall and draw on traditional masonry patterns and detailing. At the street level, blue glazed brick beneath a copper-colored metal cornice animates the façade and reflects the energy of this busy commercial corridor.

SGS is excited to contribute to this effort led by the building’s tenant leaders and community partners to build high-quality homes in the East Village. We hope to see more projects like this one in the future!
